STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING · BRISTOL

New space that works with the home you already have.

From a rear kitchen extension to a side addition, the junction between new and existing construction deserves careful attention.

The opening into the existing house

Large rear openings often govern the structural scheme. We consider the loads above, available bearings, the retained walls and any need for posts or a frame. Proposed glazing and clear headroom can influence the arrangement.

Roofs, floors and foundations

The agreed design may cover roof members, floor supports and foundations. Ground conditions, nearby drains, trees, adjoining structures and boundary constraints can affect the foundation proposal. Site findings may require the design to be reviewed rather than assuming a standard detail suits every plot.

Working beside neighbouring buildings

Restricted access and party-wall boundaries need early consideration. Let us know where the proposed excavation or supports sit relative to the boundary. Any party-wall advice or formal procedures are separate services unless expressly included in the appointment.

Coordinating with the architectural design

We work from the intended plans and sections, identifying where structural requirements affect the layout. If the layout changes after design starts, additional checks or revised information may be needed. Agreeing the scheme early helps keep the package coordinated.
