STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING · BRISTOL
Open up your home with a clear structural plan.
Before removing a wall or widening an opening, establish what it supports and how those loads will reach the ground afterwards.
Is the wall load-bearing?
Wall thickness alone does not answer the question. We consider the floors, roof, walls and other loads above, together with the layout and available evidence. Existing drawings can help, but a site inspection or local opening-up may be required to confirm construction.
More than a beam size
A replacement beam needs suitable bearings and adequate support beneath them. Depending on the arrangement, the design may involve padstones, masonry checks, posts or foundations. Stability and the position of nearby openings also matter. We assess these within the agreed scope rather than treating the beam as an isolated element.
Combining rooms and door openings
Opening a kitchen into a dining room can involve more than the dividing wall. Tell us about doorways you also want to widen or combine, chimney breasts, steps in floor level and any previous alterations. These details can influence the support arrangement and the practical sequence of work.
Before work starts
Share plans and photos and avoid removing structural material until the proposed works and necessary approvals are resolved. Temporary support and construction sequencing need to be planned by competent parties; a permanent beam design does not itself provide a temporary works design.
Information for your quotation
Send your postcode, approximate opening width, photographs of both sides of the wall and any plans showing the storeys above. We will explain whether a visit is needed and what the design package will cover.
